The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has placed a Post No Debit order on the bank accounts of the Osun State Government over alleged fraudulent handling of public funds to the tune of N11 billion. In a press statement released on Wednesday, the Commission said the action became necessary following suspicious movements of funds from state accounts since August 2, 2026. According to the EFCC, it has been investigating the Osun State Government since March 2026 regarding the alleged mismanagement of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds, and Federal Account Allocation Committee, FAAC, allocations. The Commission disclosed that some officials of the state government, including the Accountant General, have been invited for questioning as part of the ongoing probe. Professor William Olusola Olu-Aderounmu is not just a name in Nigerian academia — he is a pioneering spirit, a builder of enduring institutions, and a dependable beacon of excellence whose influence cuts across two continents and many generations. His simplicity and humility are, in themselves, a veritable encyclopaedia — worthy of study.
A Journey Rooted in Akure, Blossomed Across the World
Born in 1946 in Akure, the capital city of Ondo State, his intellectual promise emerged early at St. John’s Anglican Primary School and Oyemekun Grammar School, both in Akure. His academic brilliance earned him scholarship opportunities across the Atlantic, where he obtained degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Zoology, and Education — a sterling combination — from universities in Texas. With a specialization in Endocrinology, he returned home not just with knowledge, but with a compelling mission: to mould minds, strengthen institutions, and leave the system better than he met it.
His love for his alma mater, great OGSA, is immeasurable. He has been a dependable friend and ardent supporter of the prestigious institution, consistently contributing to its advancement. Besides, he is among the professors who once launched my book some years ago, and he has remained one of my steadfast admirers — frequently commending my writing prowess with warmth and conviction. I recall one occasion when he told me he would have me help edit a write-up for him — an honor I still hold dear.
Whenever I meet with Prof. Olu-Aderounmu, he is characteristically preoccupied with praises showered on Dr. Niyi Ijogun, FNIQS, the immediate past and pioneer Global President of the Oyemekun Grammar School Akure Alumni Association. He speaks with admiration of how Dr. Niyi Ijogun not only built a world-class administrative block for the school single-handedly, but also — through steady, purposeful leadership — transformed the Alumni Association’s global outlook. He would always instruct me to specially thank Dr. Niyi on his behalf. This is clear testimony that Baba is no ingrate. Moreover, his passion for the growth of Akure is extraordinary — evident in every sphere, in every endeavour, and in every direction.
Professor Olu-Aderounmu was the Guest Speaker at the 71st Founders’ Day Anniversary Lecture of Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure, during which I had the honour of serving as Master of Ceremonies. I have long known him to be a voracious reader. To visit his home is to step into a library — every corner speaks of scholarship, reflection, and a life devoted to learning. In his enclave, tables heavy with wisdom, and a quiet atmosphere that inspires deep thought.
The Architect of Transformation
Prof. Olu-Aderounmu’s life has been a masterclass in institution-building.
- Lagos State University: Founding Head of Department, later Professor.
- Ondo State College of Education, Ikere: As Provost, he ushered in a “Golden Era” — turning crisis into stability, and positioning the College as a national model for excellence with unprecedented infrastructural advancement.
- Novena University: Pioneer Vice-Chancellor.
- Wesley University, Ondo: Founder of the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Special Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor.
- Federal University, Kashere: Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council — a position he continues to grace with dedication and distinction.
He did not merely teach; he engineered systems. He turned challenges into opportunities that looked impossible until they were made real — almost like “magic”.
A Scholar, Leader, and Statesman
Beyond the lecture hall and the ivory tower, Prof. Olu-Aderounmu has rendered impactful service to Ondo State, including membership of the Economic Advisory Committee. He has also been honored as a Justice of the Peace, and has served as a consultant to UNICEF, NDCC, and the NUC.
His scholarship is equally outstanding. His pen has produced over forty-nine books and forty journal articles — a body of work that reflects both intellectual depth and uncommon discipline.
His commitment to community development has earned him traditional chieftaincy distinctions across Ondo State: Obadua of Akure, Gbayegun of Ondo, Atayese of Epinmi, Bobagunwa of Igbotu, and Aruwajoye of Iju.
In recognition of his enduring legacy, in 2025, Bamidele Olumilua University named its library after him — an honor that ensures his impact remains permanently engraved in the minds of future generations, and immortalises a personality that continues to inspire.
At 80, Prof. Olu-Aderounmu stands as a living monument of integrity, intellect, and impact. A devoted husband, caring father, and amazing grandfather blessed with accomplished children and grandchildren across the globe. He has mentored thousands, among them the incumbent Governor of Ondo State, Hon. (Dr.) Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, FCA, who also attended the grand reception — a lavish party graced with glitz and glamour — celebrating his birthday.
The calibre of dignitaries who gathered — near and far — to celebrate Baba in grand style is eloquent confirmation that he truly is an octogenarian titan. Prof. Olu-Aderounmu has set a standard of leadership that remains unsurpassed within Nigeria’s educational landscape.
I revere you, Baba. You are a living legend. To 80 years of wisdom. To 80 years of service. To 80 years of building the future we all desire. May your light continue to shine.
