"OGSA is a Model for Others to Copy" – Dr Niyi Ijogun

By: Goke Williams

The Global President of Oyemekun Grammar School Akure Alumni Association, Dr Niyi Ijogun, has described the renowned Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure, (OGSA) as a model public secondary school for others to emulate. He made this assertion yesterday while speaking at the press conference held at the school's Alumni Secretariat in Akure, the Ondo State capital, in celebration of the 72nd Founder's Week Anniversary of the school.

Ijogun appreciated God for sustaining the school, while also extending heartfelt gratitude to the founding fathers for establishing a robust foundation together with their lofty vision, notably the late Chief B F Adinlewa, and other past principals. He praised Mr Adeniyi Oluyide, the current school principal, for his passion and professional acumen, and also acknowledged the alumni association, teaching and non-teaching staff, Parents Teachers' Association (PTA), students, and other stakeholders for their unflinching support for the institution.

He lauded the efforts of the Ondo State government under the leadership of Hon Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the state governor, stating: "We are going to ensure the gap is widened. The school as we all know is a shining example of what a public secondary school should be in Ondo State, and we will continue to support the efforts of the state government."

Addressing the press to launch the anniversary festivities, the President of the 10th Global Alumni Executive Council, Dr Niyi, commended the collaborative efforts among all stakeholders, likening OGSA to a world-class institution, in his words: "We always say our competitors are not the people around; they are not the schools in Ondo State, they are not the schools in the old Western Region, but other schools in Nigeria as a whole, in Africa and we are taking it globally that is why we have Global Executive Council of the Association."

Niyi Ijogun, who is the Chairman of Premier Holiday Resorts in Igbara-Oke, pledged his unalloyed commitment to propel OGSA to greater heights in all aspects, adding that the achievements seen in the last 3 years attested to his unwavering commitment to the institution's cause. He assured the values bequeathed by the past heroes would be sustained.

He disclosed that four significant projects including the school land fencing, construction of a modern corpers' lodge sponsored by Hon Sunday Abegunde, also known as Abena, a 5,000 capacity multi-purpose hall courtesy of Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, SAN, the senator representing Ondo Central senatorial district, were ongoing, and that a groundbreaking event for the 1985 set would be held the next day (tomorrow). According to him, the set would be celebrating its 40 years anniversary and who customarily, by virtue of their 40 years of leaving the school, would be hosting the annual general meeting on Saturday 1st of February 2025 at the St Andrew's Anglican Church Event Hall by 10 am. He applauded the 1985 Set under the Chairmanship of Estate Surveyor Akinpelu Akinmola, the Director of Lands and Services of the Ondo State Ministry of Lands and Housing, for their unflinching dedication to their Alma mater.

In fortifying the security architecture of the school, Ijogun mentioned the implementation of a security task force network and the installation of CCTV cameras along with solar lights across the premises. He highlighted the school's modern ICT laboratories, which also serve as a learning hub for numerous external educational institutions.

Present at the event were the Global Secretary General, Comrade Rotimi Boboye, Esq, Women's Wing Chairperson, who also doubles as the 72nd Founder's Week Anniversary, Chief Dr (Mrs) Kolawole Kosemani, Global Publicity Secretary, Pastor Ayoola Ikulamberu, Global Ex-officio Member, Hon Goke Williams, Akure Alumni Association Vice Chairman, Hon Kehinde Boboye, and the school's Vice Principals:  Mr J A Folagbade, Mrs Roseline Ojo, Mr Bode Olayinka, and  Mr Adeyeye. Also in attendance were the Director of Accounts, Mr Fisayo Fapohunda, Mrs Babalola, Mr Taiwo Adebayo-Gold, among others.

The school has graduated over 42,000 students since its establishment on the 29th of January 1953, and continues to grow stronger in both academic curriculum and extracurricular pursuits. It has produced distinguished personalities who are making significant impacts worldwide.

The 72nd Founder's Week Anniversary will be rounded off on Sunday 2nd February 2025 with a special thanksgiving at the St Andrew's Anglican Church by 10 am. All old students are enjoined to grace the events.
