A Life of Simplicity, Humility, and Humanity: Honouring the Legacies of Hon Tayo Oluwatuyi (Tuykana)

I am profoundly saddened by the passing of Hon Tayo Oluwatuyi, affectionately known as Tuykana. He departed this life in the early hours of today following a tragic car accident in which he was involved a few weeks ago. Until his painful yet glorious transition, he held the esteemed position of Secretary to the Government of Ondo State.

My first encounter with Hon Tuykana, as he was fondly called, was in 2004 when he graciously hosted the Home Branch of Oyemekun Grammar School Akure Old Students' Association in a lavish manner at his residence, situated opposite the Ondo State High Court in Akure. I got to know of the meeting via a radio announcement. His serenity, coupled with his amiable demeanour, was palpable at the meeting.

Hon Tayo Oluwatuyi would pick whoever called him on phone, regardless of the time or day – a trait that is exceedingly rare among contemporary politicians. Even amidst his busy engagements in Abuja while diligently pursuing political elevation before he was shortly reappointed as SSG, he consistently attended to my calls. We have truly lost an extraordinary being. I distinctly recall reaching out to him over the phone that I would like to see him over a personal matter, amazingly, he promptly responded by scheduling a rendezvous for that same evening. He candidly imparted invaluable advice regarding my political endeavours, courtesy of Dr Niyi Ijogun, the Global President of Oyemekun Grammar School Akure Alumni Association, who had earlier called him over the phone on my behalf.

Despite his numerous political accomplishments, he would quietly enter the OGSA school hall, the customary venue for the monthly meeting holds every last Thursday of the month, and modestly take a seat at the back. Although he would be promptly recognised and requested to join the executive members at the high table, he would often decline even when pressed to do so. He exuded humility, unpretentiousness, and respectfulness to an extraordinary degree. Even when he graciously hosted the association at the school hall, disregarding his esteemed political status, he could be seen clearing plates and bottles. What a modest and exceptional soul!

He graced my father's mini burial party on the invitation of my uncle. I approached him there, and he attentively listened to my concerns. I briefed him on a certain matter and subsequently introduced my siblings to him. It was on Friday evening and he said we should come and see him at home in the following morning, on Saturday. And the outcome was eventually positive. He would never postpone any assistance he could offer or any influence he could wield on your behalf. He was a man of action, profoundly compassionate and humane. I could continue to extol his magnanimity. He embodied compassion and selflessness in a remarkable manner. Tuykana was a true pillar of hope, reliability, and dependability for all those who crossed paths with him. His legacy will endure in the hearts of many, as he touched countless lives through his generosity, empathy, and deep sense of duty. His life served as a testament to gentleness, kindness, and unwavering dedication to the advancement of others. He was a beacon of enthusiasm and hope for many.

We must stop living our lives as though we would never die. It is disheartening to witness people starving beside you while you choose to ignore them, despite possessing millions stored in your bank account. We must strive to be more compassionate and considerate towards our fellow human beings. No one lives here forever; for one day or the other we shall all leave. Do not be power drunk; for one day, you will either relinquish power or it will relinquish you. It is high time mortals swallowed their pride. Whatever accomplishments you have achieved are not solely attributable to your wisdom and strength, but to the grace of God. Learn to humble yourself, for you were made of dust and unto dust you shall return. Extend help to those whom you have the power or influence to assist. We only have this moment. Should you fail to do so, rest assured that God will raise up another individual of superior capability to fulfill that duty. Above all, let love lead. It is not about today, but tomorrow. What will be said of you when you depart from this transient existence?

Undoubtedly, the passing of Hon Tayo Oluwatuyi is a huge loss not only to his Alma mater – OGSA – Akure Kingdom, and the Ondo State government, but also to the entire nation. Akure has lost one of its distinguished sons. He was an exceptional leader and a grassroots politician. I will certainly miss you, Great Oyemekuan. He will forever be remembered for his invaluable contributions to the progress of Ondo State, Akure land, and all those who encountered him. I urge everyone to find solace in the enduring impact he made during his lifetime. His lasting legacies – Simplicity, Humility, and Humanity – will forever be etched in the hearts of this generation and those yet to come. May God comfort his family, friends, and followers. Sir, you lived a life of distinction! Heaven will surely celebrate your arrival. Rest peacefully, Hon Tuykana.

Signed:

Hon Goke Williams

Beware of Ondo-Ore Road

– As Motorists Call for Urgent Attention... The Ondo-Ore Road, currently undergoing construction, has become an exceedingly dangerous route for motorists plying it.  An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, shared his experience with Gok Communications. "The contractor responsible for the project should please establish accessible entry and exit points along the road, in addition to providing more prominent road signs and diversion signposts to facilitate the movement of vehicles, particularly during this rainy season. Numerous cars were trapped on the road while I was navigating it this evening," he lamented. He therefore implored the government to appeal to the contractors handling the Ondo-Ore road construction to take the necessary actions to ensure a seamless flow of transportation along the busy road. However, the federal government's vigorous efforts in the dualization of the road are highly commendable. It is indeed a testament to the dividends of democracy, and al...

A 100-level English Education student, simply indentified as Aisha, allegedly stabbed a fellow student from the Chemistry Education department with a broken bottle near his chest. The altercation arose from a seemingly argument over phone charging, which rapidly escalated into a violent confrontation. According to eyewitnesses, Aisha had been embroiled in a heated argument with a group of students who had gathered to charge their phones at her villa. The persistent electricity supply issues in the town had led to this gathering, which Aisha apparently found intolerable. As tensions flared, a male student attempted to intervene and calm Aisha down, but she remained unappeased. A software professional, he’d long dreamed of building a life abroad for his wife and three young children, who stayed back in India. Sent it to relatives. A one-way journey to a new life. But they never made it. The plane crashed. No one survived. In a matter of moments, a lifetime of dreams turned to ash. A brutal reminder, life is terrifyingly fragile. Everything you build, everything you hope for, everything you love, it all hangs by a thread.
