The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has placed a Post No Debit order on the bank accounts of the Osun State Government over alleged fraudulent handling of public funds to the tune of N11 billion. In a press statement released on Wednesday, the Commission said the action became necessary following suspicious movements of funds from state accounts since August 2, 2026. According to the EFCC, it has been investigating the Osun State Government since March 2026 regarding the alleged mismanagement of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds, and Federal Account Allocation Committee, FAAC, allocations. The Commission disclosed that some officials of the state government, including the Accountant General, have been invited for questioning as part of the ongoing probe. "The Commission noticed huge transfers of funds into different corporate entities and had to swiftly halt the trend by freezing the accounts from which such heavy funds are being moved," the statement read. A Jeju aircraft has claimed the lives of 179 people out of the 181 passengers on board. The incident occurred when the plane belly landed on a runway at the Muan International Airport in South Korea before skidding off and shortly, bursting into flames. The crash occurred approximately two minutes after the airliner made a mayday call to the control tower, which instructed the plane to land in the opposite direction on the runway.
Two crew members – one male and one female – survived the deadly crash and are in hospital. The two survivors were found in the plane’s tail. "The final death toll from the plane crash in South Korea is 179, meaning just two people survived, two crew members survived the Jeju Air crash after being pulled from the plane’s tail. Both are in hospital, but their condition is not yet known", the fire service said.
"Among the dead, 84 are male and 85 are female while the genders of 10 people have not been confirmed", according to the authority.
"More than 1,570 personnel from the military, police and government have been deployed to Muan in South Korea’s Jeolla province to provide support for the recovery effort", an official from the country’s transport ministry made known to the public.
Experts said that the plane’s undercarriage – specifically, the wheels used for takeoff and landing – seemed not to have fully deployed before landing. At the airport, relatives of the victims have been demanding the cause of the crash from officials. But what caused this failure to deploy is still unknown as at the time of filing in this report.
The South Korea’s acting President, Choi Sang-mok, has declared a week-long mourning period from Sunday December 29 2024 to Saturday January 4 2025, following the ill-fated airliner crash, as gathered by Gok Communications. The week of mourning will be held in South Korea’s Jeolla province to remember the victims of the plane crash, a provincial official said during a briefing on Sunday. He added that 17 memorial altars would be established nationwide.
The Jeju Air crash is the deadliest aviation havoc to hit South Korea since 1997, when a Korean Airlines flight crashed in the Guam jungle, killing 228 people.
