Naomi, Oriyomi, School Principal to Spend Christmas in Detention

A Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Iyaganku, Ibadan, today, Tuesday, ordered the remand of the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola, the Chief Executive Officer of Agidigbo FM, Oriyomi Hamzat, and the Principal of Islamic High School, Abdullahi Fasasi, at the Agodi Correctional Centre.

The remand order followed their arraignment in connection with last week’s tragic stampede at a Christmas funfair held at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which claimed the lives of 35 children and left six others injured.

The court was presided over by Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi, who gave the order after the suspects were brought to the court amidst heavy security.

The defendants are facing a four-count charge, including conspiracy and murder. However, the trio pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them. According to the police prosecutor, the offences contravened Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The prosecutor alleged that the trio played a role in the event leading to the unfortunate stampede that turned the Christmas funfair into a Christmas tragedy.

Chief Magistrate Ogunkanmi directed that the defendants be remanded at the Agodi Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Oyo State Director of Public Prosecutions.

The court proceedings, which drew significant public attention, saw law enforcement officers heavily guarding the suspects as they were escorted to and from the court premises.

The presiding judge, Chief Magistrate Ogunkanmi, adjourned the case to 13 January 2025 while the defendants remain in custody.

EFCC Gives Reasons for Freezing Osun State Government Account

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has placed a Post No Debit order on the bank accounts of the Osun State Government over alleged fraudulent handling of public funds to the tune of N11 billion. In a press statement released on Wednesday, the Commission said the action became necessary following suspicious movements of funds from state accounts since August 2, 2026. According to the EFCC, it has been investigating the Osun State Government since March 2026 regarding the alleged mismanagement of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds, and Federal Account Allocation Committee, FAAC, allocations.
